Middle school, JV Lady Dogs update

Girls’ basketball action continued at both Morgan County High and Middle Schools for the Junior Varsity and Lady Bullpups this week.  The Middle School topped Monticello 32-16 and Social Circle 38-21 to stay undefeated while the JV fell to the Jefferson Lady Dragons.

Brian Cousins described his team’s play, “We got off to a quick start against Monticello when Shay Brown got six of her ten total points in the first six minutes of play.  Our defense has been strong all year and we played great defense again in this one.”  He specifically pointed out Destiny Hunter and Aliyah Cooper for their defensive effort in the win.  Morgan led 12-2 after the first quarter and allowed only six total points in the first half to take a 22-6 lead into intermission.  Seven players scored as the team coasted to the win after the break.

Social Circle proved to be more of a test than the Lady Hurricanes.  After the opening quarter, the teams were tied at 6-all, but a big second quarter by Precious Benford put some distance between the two squads.  Cousins remarked, “We were sluggish in the opening minutes, but broke things open in the second quarter when Precious scored six of her 12 points.  We poured it on after half by outscoring them 16-3 in the third quarter to get the 38-21 win.”

The Lady Bulldogs’ JV team under the direction of Coach Candi Wyatt took the loss at Jefferson on Wednesday.  Tuesday afternoon games have not been kind to the team according to Wyatt.  She said, “Unfortunately, it was another tough loss on a Tuesday night.  We got off to a slow start against Jefferson’s JV dealing with a few injuries to some of our starters.  That caused some of our younger players to have to step up and play big minutes.  Our girls played tough on defense and were able to get some good looks at the basket on offense.  We are continuing to get stronger and learn from our mistakes.

MCMS has two home games remaining before the break with Youth Dec. 11 and Putnam coming in Friday, Dec. 13.  The JV will travel to Buford next Tuesday, Dec. 17 to play the Lady Wolves on the road. Games start at 4:30 for MCMS and 4:00 for the JV.
