An 18-year-old Godfrey teen remains incarcerated in the Morgan County Detention Center after his Jan. 9 arrest on cruelty to children in the first degree charges.

According to Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reports, Mateo Burgos Jr., Godfrey was arrested on Jan. 9 by Morgan County Sheriff’s Office deputies at his Seven Islands Road after Morgan County Magistrate Judge Connie Holt signed an arrest warrant executed by Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Special Agent Niki Simmons.

The warrant alleges that on Dec. 17 Burgos was laying in bed with the child’s mother when the woman’s 7-month female child “got fussy” while in a bouncy seat. Burgos allegedly moved the child to another room and, warrants allege, then came into the bedroom and told the child’s mother the child had suddenly stopped crying.

“He said he found the child lying over and not responding with blood coming from her mouth and proceeded to get the mother of the child and 911 was called,” warrants state.

The child was transported to Egleston Children’s Hospital “where the doctors found the child to have multiple abrasions to her mouth, multiple contusions to both sides of her face, Subdural Hemorrhaging, Retinal Hemorrhaging and Adrenal Hemorrhaging. Her left wrist had a buckle fracture and the Frenulum in her mouth was torn,” the warrant states.

According to GBI Special Agent Joe Wooten “it appears the child will survive.”
