After qualifying seven for the East Wrestling Sectionals for AAA, the Morgan County Mat Dogs will now send four of those wrestlers to the State Wrestling Tournament.  Matches begin Friday, Feb. 9 and continue into Saturday with champions being crowned the second day of competition.

The following is a synopsis of the Sectionals action of each wrestler given to us by Coach Dusty Sidwell.

106 – Griffin McAlister started the tournament right out of the gates and faced the Area Champ from Area 1-AAA.  He had a hard fought match to lose only by four points.

113 – Tyler Snowden gets a big win against the Area Runner up for 1-AAA.  He went on to lose to the 4-AAA champ by a fall.  Tyler wrestled back to the Consolation Semis and lost to his opponent in over time by a take down.  Tyler went on to finish out the tournament in sixth place for a possible Alternate Qualifier.

138 – Kevin Berisko started out with the 1-AAA Champ and had a HUGE match winning on a last period take down to help him advance to the semifinals.  He faced his opponent which ended up being the 4-AAA Area Runner-up.  Kevin avenged an earlier loss to him beating him 7-6, again in a barn burner to advance to the finals!  Kevin fell short and took second place at Sectionals!

152 – Garner Drummond took on the fourth seed from 1-AAA and ended the match with a fall.  This allowed him to advance to the semifinals where he beat his opponent by a major decision 15-3.  This impressive win put him in the finals where he dominated his opponent with a score of 17-6.  Garner finished as the 152 Sectional Champ!

160 – Donovan McElligott.  Donovan had a great first match against the third place finisher from 1-AAA.  He won by a fall which allowed him to advance to the semifinals.  In the semifinal match Donovan had to face the 1-AAA Champ.  Donovan wrestled a tough match against a very athletic wrestler to win 7-4.  Donovan wrestled the 4-AAA Area champ again from last weekend.  Donovan wrestled very tough and took his opponent down several times but would come up short with a 10-5 loss.  Donovan took second place at Sectionals!

182 – Finn Williams would wrestle the third place 1-AAA wrestler.  Finn wrestled a tough match winning 7-6 over Savannah Arts.  Advancing to the semifinals, Finn wrestled the 1-AAA champ and won in a tough 3-1 match.  Winning allowed Finn to advance to the finals were he would take on his opponent from last week.  Finn wrestled in a close match to come from behind with a reversal that would secure the win for Finn.  Finn Williams would become the 182 Sectional Champ!

195 – Hayden Snowden has been one of the toughest wrestlers all year for us.  He came out and wrestled the 1-AAA Area Runner-up and would end up losing by a fall.  He wrestled back beating Cook County by a fall before dropping a match to Jackson County.  Hayden continued to fight placing fifth at Sectionals for a state alternate.

Sidwell said, “Overall, the wrestling team fought hard!  The kids had a great weekend followed by several hardships.  The goal/dream for every high school wrestler is to make it to State and be on the podium at the end of the tournament.  These wrestlers work though weekends, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even New Year’s to accomplish this.  Getting to State is something that only eight wrestlers from each weight class get to do.  To get there is a huge accomplishment.  We will take four wrestlers to compete and find out Where We Will Stand!”
