Sharon Anne Mackey Maddox, 58 of Madison, succumbed after a lengthy illness on October 10, 2012. She was at her home surrounded by her loving family and dedicated friends. She is the daughter of Ditha Brewer Mackey and the late Theral Eugene Mackey. She was born September 17, 1954 in Laurens County, Georgia.
She is survived by her husband John Maddox and her mother Ditha Brewer Mackey; two sons Jace Maddox and Davis Maddox and his wife Salle and a daughter Alaina Maddox. She was the proud grandmother of one granddaughter Emmie Maddox. Her siblings include Theral Mackey and Helen of St. Augustine, Fla., Myra Mackey and Kevin Mackey, both of Madison; and many nieces and nephews and other family members.
Sharon and John were residents of Morgan County during all 34 years of their marriage. She was dedicated to her community and the education of students. She was active in Madison Baptist Church where she shared the responsibility of keeping the church library.
Sharon graduated from Georgia College with a B.S. degree in 1976 and later received a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Georgia. Before marriage she was employed by the Greene County Board of Education. Later she continued her teaching career for more than 20 years in Morgan County Schools. She retired in June 2012 after having established and implemented a state and nationally acclaimed reading program for the students of Morgan County Middle School.
The family received friends at A. E. Carter Funeral Home. The funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 12 at Madison Baptist Church with interment following at the Madison City Cemetery.
