The Morgan County girls varsity basketball team traveled to Laurens County to compete in the East Laurens Falcons’ Christmas Tournament. The team played against two teams, losing to Dodge County 34-44 but earning a 47-26 victory over East Laurens.
Morgan County fell behind Dodge County in the first quarter 9-18, and they were never able to sustain a lead into the end of a quarter.
Carvetta Williams led the girls in scoring against Dodge County with 11 points. Sydney Nash and Stacia McClelland also contributed nine and eight points, respectively.
The girls turned their play around against East Laurens, scoring 17 points in the first half, while holding East Laurens to only six points in the first half.
Nash and McClelland scored 10 points apiece against the Falcons. B’onica Massey added seven points to the total.
Despite the loss during the first day of the tournament against Dodge County, Coach Charlemagne Gibbons sees improvement in the team’s performances.
”We continue to get better each game,” said Coach Gibbons. “We are beginning to be ready for region play. Girls are starting to learn their roles and getting more comfortable on the floor.”
The girls varsity team did not travel with the boys to the Kingdom of the Sun Tournament that took place in Ocala, Fla. last week. The next scheduled girls game will take place on Friday, Jan. 4 against Elbert County away. The MCHS teams will all be back at home for the first time in almost one month to face Franklin County on Jan. 11.
