The Morgan County High School’s junior varsity tennis team had their first match last Friday afternoon at home against Oconee High School. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 12, but last week’s rain caused the postponement.
Morgan County won six of the 16 matches played against Oconee.
Brayden Hutchenson and Tom Ring won their singles matches 8-5 and 8-3, respectively. Both boys’ doubles teams won their matches; Corey Hopson and Brayden Hutchenson outscored Oconee 8-2, while Matt Vill and Mason Devane also came out on top of Oconee 8-5.
Morgan Nash was the only Morgan County girl to win her singles match. Maggie Hume’s match went to tiebreaker play, but she eventually lost 12-10.
Ryann Pittman and Morgan Nash won their doubles match 8-3.
JV tennis coach Catherine Lindsey already sees a level of improvements in the team, which is manifesting itself in the performance of the athletes.
“The JV team has been working hard and I can see great improvements everyday,” said Coach Lindsey. “We had some very close matches against Oconee and I look forward to playing them again.”
The junior varsity tennis team traveled to Jefferson Tuesday to compete alongside the varsity team. The matches against Jefferson were the first event of the season for the varsity tennis team.
Both the JV and varsity teams will be competing at home today, Thursday, Feb 21, against Buford. The matches begin at 4:30.
