Mat Dogs third in Rumble
By Greg Sullivan
The Mat Dogs had three starters taking the S.A.T. test Saturday, but they still managed to salvage a third place finish out of the Redskin Rumble tournament in Social Circle.
The Dogs finished behind Jackson County and Alcovy.
The highlight of the tournament for the Dogs was Austin Sharp being voted Outstanding Wrestler of the tourney by the coaches after turning in two falls and nearly a tech. He got a fall in the finals against a returning state placer from Buford.
"Jacob Akins wrestled particularly well to get to the finals of a loaded 103 pound bracket," said Mat Dog Head Coach John Robbins.
"Zach Yost was wrestling particularly well going into the finals," Robbins said. "When he hyper-extended his knee and was forced to default the match."
Tournament champs for the Dogs were Sharp at 145 pounds and Nick Childers at 171.
Akins and Yost each took second place. While Kody Vaughters and Wes East each took third place, at 130 and heavyweight respectively.
Akins improved his record to 37-11 on the year, Vaughters improved to 33-7, Yost to 35-14, Sharp to 42-3, Nick Childers to 37-5 and East to 36-4.
Other records at .500 and above winning percentage wrestling last weekend include Mack McKenzie at 20-20, Jared Rector at 8-5, Kyle Palmer at 16-12, Ryan Childers at 19-14.
The Mat Dogs have Senior Night on Thursday when they host Greene County and Evans. Then they won't see further action until next Thursday.
