The Pups came out on top in an overtime thriller over Social Circle in Madison on Friday, splitting their week's games.
Morgan County let the Redskins get back in the game to tie things up, but the Pups turned around and dominated the overtime period, outscoring their opponents 8-1 to win the contest 41-34.
"This was a good measuring stick showing we could keep our composure without two of our key starters who were out due to injury," said Bullpup Head Coach Milfred Franklin.
The Pups were up 25-22 going into the final period and had plenty of opportunities to put the game away in regulation but couldn't.
After missing some timely free throws and watching Social Circle hit some big three pointers the game wound up in overtime.
That's where the Pups turned things around behind six overtime points from Guy Davis.
"We went back to running our offense like we were supposed to and that's why we came out on top," Franklin said.
The Pups were led by Guy Taylor who had 16 points in the win. Marty Cobb had nine and Devin Franklin had seven. Damien Anderson and Connor O'Neal each added four.
In last Wednesday's game the Pups came up short, falling 43-35 at Youth.
"We played very well for the first three quarters," Franklin said. "In the fourth quarter we fell apart."
"We went away from what was working," he said, "Which was our defensive effort."
The Pups led at the half 20-17. Youth came back in the third quarter, going up 29-26 going into the fourth quarter on their way to the win.
"We allowed one person to dominate the game," Franklin said. A Youth player exploded for a 21-point game making things tough on the Pups.
Guy Taylor led the Pups with 13 points, Marty Cobb had 12 and Fred Williams had four.
The Pups began their tournament run on Tuesday in Madison. Finals will be held on Friday afternoon if the Pups make their way back for the second year in a row.
"This year the championship's up for grabs," Franklin said. "If we execute we should have no problem getting back to the championship."
