After losing a tough road game last Tuesday at Washington-Wilkes, the Bulldogs responded with a big win Friday night over Oglethorpe in Madison in the last regular season boys game in the current Morgan County High School gym.
"It was senior night. I think our guys came out ready to play," said Bulldog Head Coach Charlemagne Gibbons. "The guys had a lot of energy."
The team cruised to a 60-43 win over the Patriots, jumping on them early. The Dogs led 22-10 going into the first quarter and 35-21 at the half on their way to a relatively easy victory, their first after the four straight region losses that followed their 5-0 start.
D.J. Calhoun led the team with 16 in the win. Other top scorers were Brian Greene with 11, Jamil Hodnett with eight and Lavar Smith with seven. Dee Elder and Terence Harper both added six in the win that sent the Dogs into the region tournament on a much needed positive note.
In last Tuesday's 59-48 loss at Washingon-Wilkes the Dogs hung around for a while, but couldn't overcome a Tigers team hungry for revenge.
The Dogs beat Wilkes at home a few weeks back, but this time on the road things were different.
"We just didn't do a great job, we didn't play well," said Gibbons.
The Bulldog team did, however, hang around to keep things close for much of the game. Washington-Wilkes led 17-14 going into the second quarter and 30-26 at the half. The Tigers pulled away some in the third quarter, carrying a 45-37 lead into the final period on their way to the win.
C.J. Benford led the Bulldogs with 13 points in the defeat. Jamil Hodnett had nine points and D.J. Calhoun added eight.
