Morgan County High School's boys and girls tennis teams started their seasons off on the right foot, picking up opening wins over Monroe Area last Wednesday in Madison.
"It was good to get the win with both teams," said Morgan County Head Tennis Coach Jim Fowler.
Both the boys and girls teams had their away matches at Elbert last Friday rescheduled for later in the season.
Allen Conner, first singles, won his season opener 10-3 over Monroe, Daniel Smith, second singles, won his match 10-3 and Logan Plumly picked up a 10-2 win as the boys teams swept the competition.
Winning first doubles for the Dogs were Skip Lewan and Brett Richardson who won 10-5. Dillon Moore and Blake Brand won second doubles 10-3.
The girls matches were closer, but the team still picked up the overall win.
Lauren Lindsey, first singles, fell 10-6, but Courtney Perry, second singles, and Mary Helen Trulock picked up wins 10-2 and 11-9 respectively.
Victoria Woodruff and Emily Jones won first doubles for the ladies 10-2 and Layne Jackson and Katherine Cooper won second doubles 10-6.
The tennis teams have several new faces this year, as they're replacing four starters on the boys team and five starters on the girls team from last season.
"We are very young and inexperienced this year," said Fowler. "Once we settle our nerves and continue hard work at practice, I feel good about where we are headed."
The team visits Buford this Thursday for another a non-region contest.
"Buford will be a tough match coming up this week," Fowler said. "We look to work hard this week and prepare for one of the toughest teams we will face this year."
The teams’ next home matches are next Monday, March 3, when they host Spalding County. The teams then visit Madison County next Thursday. They start their region schedules at Washington-Wilkes on March 18.
