Shooting death ruled self–defense

A Morgan County Grand Jury Tuesday elected not to indict Stan Schroeder, 33, Buckhead, on criminal charges surrounding the shooting death of 37–year–old Eloy Escobido. By returning a “no bill,” the grand jury indicated they believed the March 6, 2008 shooting to be self–defense. “I don’t mind stating that I publicly agree with their decision,” said Ocumulgee Judicial District Attorney Fred Bright. “I feel it comes under the umbrella of self–defense.”

The shooting occurred outside Schroeder’s home during an argument allegedly regarding payment to Escobido. Bright said Escobido attacked Schroeder with a knife. Schroeder shot Escobido once with a pistol.

“There will be no criminal case against Stan Schroeder,” Bright said.
