The Morgan County Middle School Bullpup football team opened their season last Wednesday with a 26-0 shutout win over Monticello.
A strong defensive effort combined with a fast offense was too much for Monticello to handle.
Several game changing stops on fourth-and-one by the Bullpup defense sparked the offense to perform with the same intensity, Head Coach Stacy Webb said.
"We had several key fourth-and-one stops. Those plays ignited a drive in the offense that led to several big plays that resulted in scores."
Linebackers Stewart Spence, Austin Ross and Bailey Ross, along with cornerbacks Grayson Segrest and AK Shue were credited with several defensive stops.
The game started tight for both teams, and the Bullpups closed the half with an 8-0 lead.
"It was tight out there for the first two quarters, and I stressed to them to keep their heads in the game and not to give up," Webb said.
Runningback Davon Gibbs opened the game up in the second half with two big runs that resulted in touchdowns.
"Davon had several big runs that kept us ahead in the game," Webb said. "We will be relying on his speed throughout the course of this season."
Webb added that quarterback Carter Shultz played a solid game by managing the team and executing the plays.
"We didn't know what to expect going into this season," Webb said. "I was very well pleased with the performance and the intensity our kids brought. They showed me they can still keep their heads on until the end. They never gave up and continued to play hard all game long. The kids hit well on defense and executed well on offense. We will continue work from here and are looking forward to the rest of the year."
The Bullpups will host Loganville High School on Wednesday, September 17.
