Louise Neese Elliott

Louise Neese Elliott, 82, died September 30, 2008. She was born September 8, 1926 in Gwinnett County to Ross and Mattie Wilson Neese. She later married Clarence W. Elliott Sr. Mrs. Elliott worked as a nurse’s aid for many years. She attended the Covington Church of God.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Clarence Elliott Sr. and their children, Clarence W. Elliott Jr. and Martha of Auburn, Sandra Smith of Newborn and Bill Elliott and Betty of Madison; a sister, Shirley Hughes of Pulaski, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 3 at Covington Church of God. Interment followed at Lawn Memorial Park.

George Robert “Bob” Phillips Sr.

George Robert “Bob” Phillips 82, of Madison died Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Embracing Hospice in Snellville. He was born August 18, 1926 in Fulton County to Owen and Marget Wallace Phillips. He grew up in Atlanta, graduating from Tech High in June of 1944.  He served in the United States Navy on Okinawa during World War II. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950.
Mr. Phillips taught chemistry and general science at Roosevelt High in Atlanta. He retired as head of the Science Department. In 1957 he received a grant in Botany and Biology and continued his education at UC-Berkely. He was an entrepreneur and humanitarian working at Fulton Bag Cotton Mill with YMCA boys. All of his life he was a dedicated botanist, furnishing many of the area formal gardens and businesses with subtropical and exotic plants.
He was a member of the Madison Presbyterian Church, the SouthEastern Exotic Plants and Palm Society, the Georgia Cattleman’s Association and the Greene and Morgan Timber and Landowners Association. He was a rancher, nurseryman and member of the Georgia Republican Party,
He is survived by his wife, Julia Thorn Phillips and sons, George Robert Phillips Jr. and Kathryn Tyna Phillips and Parker Kim Phillips and Tamara King Phillips, grandchildren, Christine Elizabeth Verikas, Lora Ashley Phillips, Austin Parker Phillips, Matthew Thomas Phillips and Mitchell Avery Phillips; a sister, Marget Dorothy Ackerly and niece and nephew, April Wells-Hayes and Clark Hayes. He was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Elizabeth Hayes.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 5 at Cannon United Methodist Church in Snellville. Interment was in Floral Hills in Tucker.
Memorial may be made to the Georgia Alzheimer’s Association.

Paul William Erb

    Paul William Erb, 77, of Madison died Tuesday, October 7, 2008. He was born June 28, 1931 in Rapid City, S.D. He spent much of his career in New York. He was a chemical engineer working for McGraw-Hill publishing.
    Mr. Erb retired to St. Augustine, Florida before moving to Madison in 1999 upon his marriage to Nannette Patrick. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens but was active at Madison Baptist Church, which he considered his fellowship home. He enjoyed writing and was a member of the Madison Writers Group.
    He is survived by his wife, Nannette Patrick Erb and his children, Kathy Erb Barbaro, Susan Erb Jannucci, David William Erb and Lisa Erb-Darby; two step-children, Mike Patrick and Libby Powell; 11 grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; and a sister, Karin Erb Mason. A brother, Ronald Erb, preceded him in death.
    The family will receive friends Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. at A. E. Carter Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at the Madison City Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Madison Baptist Church or Trinity Lutheran Church.
