Last Thursday, the Morgan County High School Mat Dogs held their last duals of the season. In addition to the Dogs, who hosted the event, the match included teams from Social Circle, Dublin, Westside, Central, and West Laurens.

The summer schedule competitions, which allowed the wrestling team to get in almost a half-season of experience, was “very” productive according to MCHS wrestling coach John Robbins.

Coach Robbins described the summer season’s purpose in terms of the program as a whole by saying that the summer competitions, “really can help a young wrestler catch up with the field, or conversely help an old wrestler pull ahead.”

The added experience will do the Mat Dogs well, as a number of the team leaders were lost this year to graduation. But, as always, the potential for growth and renewal is the most anticipated and, arguably, exciting aspect of the season.

“I think we have the potential to do really well as a team,” began Coach Robbins. “We certainly have a few that could find themselves in the finals, although last year there was possibly a few more hopefuls. That’s the great part of it: who knows what the season will bring?”
