During the Commission meeting, a proposal was made for Morgan County, working with the City of Madison, to create a tornado shelter.

According to County Manager Michael Lamar, the need for such safe rooms came following the tornados in the spring of 2011 when Deer Haven Mobile Home Park on East Washington Street toward the bypass became a federally declared disaster area.

He said that Morgan County received a grant of $250,000 for the construction of the shelter, which will be able to fit 198 people.

The estimate from Thomasville-based Survive-A-Storm Shelters show a balance due of $192,664.

The commissioners unanimously approved the proposal.

In other news, commissioners approved two applicants for the Northeast Georgia Regional 10 Emergency Medical Service Advisory Board. The applicants are Huey Atkins, currently on the board, and Shana Stubbs, emergency room manager at Morgan Memorial Hospital.
