During their meeting Monday, July 8, the Madison City Council unanimously approved a zoning map amendment for a Planned Residential District (PRD) for properties along Town Walk Circle.
Council members heard details about the request from City Planner Bryce Jaeck regarding the amendment. He shared that the planning commission unanimously voted to recommend it.
In addition to the three houses already in Town Walk Circle, Jaeck said new plans call for a mix of single-family homes and some attached dwellings.
Planning Director Monica Callahan shared a presentation of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) that DDA Chair Shandon Land gave to planning commission members at their meeting.
The purpose of the presentation, Callahan said, was to help the planning commission understand the various components of the West Washington Street Gateway.
Included in the presentation were pictures of slum and blight, vacant and boarded-up properties, vacant lots, some anchor businesses and some underutilized properties.
There also was a picture of a failed subdivision, referred to as a pipe farm, which the applicant, Sandy Sanford has purchased.
Callahan said the pictures showed “just general conditions we want to get better.”
She added that Sanford has “stepped up to the plate and looked at the area with a kind eye.” She indicated pictures of two properties he currently is working to improve.
Callahan also spoke about the DDA’s plans to relocate a historic train depot along the edge of the property.
As for a tot lot included in the original plans for the area, Callahan said they will do a tot lot, “just not there.”
Mayor Bruce Gilbert said, “It looks like a good project.”
Sanford offered to answer questions from council members.
No one else from the public spoke either for or against the amendment request.
Council members voted unanimously first to remove some land from the PRD and then to zone the removed land P2, Professional / Limited Commercial District.
