Richard Maurice Hawkins, 65, died September 3, 2013. He was born in Madison to Pecola Hawkins.

Upon graduation from Pearl High School he “tossed his cap” and walked away from Madison swearing not to return. He joined the United States Navy shortly after graduating from high school and served for six consecutive active and reserve years. He toured the Republic of Vietnam with distinction and as the recipient of three Bronze Stars. Afterward he was stationed in San Diego, California where his honorable service to this nation persisted.

After his discharge from service he returned back to Georgia where he began his career in law enforcement with the Atlanta Police Department on October 6, 1970. He served 30 of his 32 years in APD Communications on the morning watch.

He leaves to cherish his memory his companion and the love of his life Bertha Mathis, his mother Pecola Hawkins; two children Yashlyn “Ya-Ya” Roberson (Elliott) of Savannah, Ricardo “Ricky” Hawkins (Karenda) of Atlanta, step-sons Alvin “Peanut” Hudson of Atlanta, Kacy Morgan and Anthony Walker of Madison, eight grandchildren, two sisters Patricia Hutchins of Atlanta and Eleanor Nasir of Madison, his best friend Laura Butler and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by his sister, Jacquelyn Wooten and a brother James Hawkins.

Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 at Smyrna Baptist Church.

Jones and Turner Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.
