The Morgan County High School (MCHS) cross country team competed in the Seventh Annual Eagle Invitational, which was held at East Jackson High School last Thurs., Sept. 12.
As a team, the MCHS boys placed sixth out of 14 teams in the Varsity Boys 5K race, with an average time of 18:37.68. Jeremy Craft led Morgan County with a time of 17:58.20, earning him a 16th-place finish.
Dalton Shaw came in 27th with a time of 18:19.79, and Luke Zimmerman placed 33rd at 18:35.47.
“Many of our runners set PR’s or season bests at the course, which was a very fast course,” said MCHS Cross Country Coach Brandon York. “There was a great deal of straight stretch, and weather was optimal. As a whole, the meet field was pretty solid.”
The girls averaged a time of 25:48.38 in the Varsity Girls 5K, taking ninth place out of 12 spots.
Yakira Chapman finished 44th at 23:42.85, and Carolina Zant placed in the 47th spot with a time of 23:51.60.
“The ladies turned in a nice performance, and are quietly emerging to stake a claim for a state berth,” said Coach York. “They currently sit at a fifth place region ranking, and, provided that we see folks get healthy at the right time, and catch a break here and there, we could see them sneak into the top in Region 8.”
The MCHS cross country team’s next competition will be at Athens Academy on Sept. 19.
