The Morgan County High School Spike Dogs traveled to North Oconee last Thursday to take on two tough teams: North Oconee and Hart.

In the past, both North Oconee and Hart have proved to be a challenge for the Bulldogs.

In the first set both the JV and varsity teams of Spike Dogs were defeated by the North Oconee Titans.

For the JV girls, the second set was about sticking with North Oconee. They worked hard tying the set multiple times. However, the Titans eventually pulled away, beating the JV girls 25-19 securing them the win of the match.

The varsity girls also played hard against North Oconee in the second set. The Spike Dogs fought hard, but were defeated again by North Oconee 25-16.

With the North Oconee matches behind them the Spike Dogs went on the face Hart.

In the first set Hart took the early lead over both MCHS teams.

As far as the JV girls, their serving was on point, allowing them to catch up to Hart quickly. At the seven-point mark Morgan County took the lead and never looked back. The JV girls won the set 25-17.

“We did really good in returning serves and we had really good hits,” said JV player Nicole Tallman.

The first set proved to be a little more difficult for the varsity girls. However, the Spike Dogs did not go down without a fight. The set featured one of their on the floor saves as well as powerful serves and tips. Hart took the first set 25-14.

In the second set, the varsity team took the early lead over Hart, showing Hart that they weren’t going down without a fight.

The set proved how far the varsity girls have grown as a team, constantly supporting each other. Morgan County pulled off the win with a hit in the outside corner by Riley Moss. The team went wild knowing the match would head to a third set.

While Hart took the early lead in the second set, Morgan County proved that they were not going to give up even one set. It was another set that was filled with impressive serves and teamwork. The JV Spike Dogs defeated Hart 25-22.

The JV girls then followed the crowds over to watch the varsity girls take on Hart in the third set. MCHS scored first, but Hart was not willing to give up this set easily. After tying at the four, the Spike Dogs fought hard for lead.

The two teams tied it up at 24. Keeping their fans on the edge of their seats, the Bulldogs broke the tie taking the score to 25-24. The varsity Spike Dogs won the set 26-24 taking the match two sets to one.

“This is the first time we’ve ever beat Hart County and I think we did a really good job tonight. We pulled together and worked as a team and that was a really big success for us. The next time we see Oconee we are going to get our heads together and they are a great team and we’re going to take them next time,” said varsity player Riley Moss.
