The Morgan County High School (MCHS) Bulldogs’ unexpectedly overwhelming loss against the Elbert County Blue Devils last Friday was a tough blow to sustain for both the team and the coaching staff.

As MCHS Head Football Coach, Bill Malone is keenly aware of the effect that such a loss can have on the team.

Malone said worrying about his athletes’ frame of mind, even while such a game is going on, “haunts” him, but he noted that the team handled the loss better than he expected.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it could be,” stated Malone, saying that the mood of the team was “very somber” after the game.

Coach Malone expects the team to be able to fully recover before this week’s game against the East Jackson Eagles.

“I am cautiously optimistic that we are in a good frame of mind. The only way to see is how well they play this Friday,” said Malone.

With the Elbert game at his back, Coach Malone’s top priority is this week’s homecoming game against the Eagles.

Despite the Eagles’ 1-5 overall record so far this season, Coach Malone has no intention of underestimating East Jackson during their preparations this week.

“Any time you are playing a team looking for a win, start fast. All a team like that needs is a spark,” stated Coach Malone, who continued by saying that the Eagles might look to Morgan County’s last two games as a means of boosting their confidence for the matchup.

“We had better come out fast, shut them out, and put some points on the board,” said Malone.

To that end, Malone has asked his coaching staff to streamline what is presented to the team this week, in the hopes that a simpler, more efficient game plan will enable the Dogs to play “faster and better.”

Live tackles and base fundamental blocks will be highlighted during practices this week, as the team gets back to what enabled their four-game winning streak at the beginning of the 2013 season.

“If we get back on track, we’ll do fine,” said Malone.
