On Wednesday, Oct. 16, the Morgan County High School (MCHS) varsity Lady Dogs traveled to the St. Pius X Catholic High School for the first round of state playoffs. The Dogs beat St. Pius X Golden Lions in back-to-back games, 10-1 and 9-0, to progress to the next round of state playoffs, where they will face the Buford Wolves, who have a 31-1 record this year.

The Lady Dogs came out showing the Lions no mercy. Morgan County scored three runs in the first inning.

“We jumped on them early,” said MCHS Softball Head Coach Doug Connelly. “That set the tone.”

St. Pius scored their only run of the double-header in the bottom of the first inning, but the Dogs pushed ahead incessantly.

Alishia Frierson drove in a run with a triple in the second inning to make the score 4-1, and Laree Van Orden added another in the third with an RBI single.

After Sarah Couch scored on an error in the fourth inning, Morgan County had a comfortable 6-1 lead, but they wouldn’t give up on the Golden Lions.

The Dogs earned two more runs in the fifth thanks to RBIs by Elizabeth Couch and Carly Hodgson, and the final runs of the game for Morgan County were RBIs by Laney Crawford and Aubree Cox in the sixth inning, which set the score at 10-1.

Frierson pitched the entire game, striking out four batters and allowing four hits but only one run. Coach Connelly cited the Dogs’ errorless performance as a “key” to the first win of the day and that Morgan County “never gave [St. Pius] a chance to capitalize” on their hits.

The Lady Dogs shut St. Pius out in the second game of the double-header, winning 9-0.

Van Orden and E. Couch put up the first two RBIs of the game in the first inning, but Frierson pushed the Dogs’ lead to 5-0 in the second inning with a single swing of her bat.

According to Coach Connelly, Frierson’s three-run homer put the nail in St. Pius’ coffin.

“I feel that was a big point in the game,” said Connelly. “That was a big blow for them.”

The third inning of the second game was the only inning of the day that Morgan County didn’t score a single run, but they made up for the break in the fourth inning by pinning four more runs to the board.

Frierson, Crawford, and Van Orden contributed RBIs in the fourth inning, which would be Morgan County’s last at bat. St. Pius managed only a single base runner in the game, which lasted only four and a half innings, and, again, Morgan County created no errors.

Frierson pitched the first four innings of the game, striking out one batter and allowing one hit, but Hayden Massey finished out the game by pitching a perfect fifth inning.

Yesterday, Wednesday, Oct. 23, the Lady Dogs traveled to Buford High School to play against the Wolves for the second round of state playoffs. Games took place at 4:30 and 6:30. The results of those games will be published in next week’s edition.
