Last Thursday, Nov. 21, the Morgan County Recreation Department (MCRD) held its Annual Volunteer-Sponsor Appreciation Banquet at the Madison Community Building.

During the banquet, MCRD Director Lance Alexander named John and Penny Moore, owners of Madison Care Care, and Daniel Laughlin and Robert Ford, owners of Pro-Tec Fire and Safety as the MCRD’s sponsors of the year.

Alexander stated that the recreation department had 64 sponsors during the past year.

“Without those sponsors, the fees for these kids would be way over what they are now,” said Alexander about the role that sponsors play for the recreation department.

The volunteer coaches of the year for 2013 are Brian Breda, Dwayne Peters, and Jeff Callaway. Alexander thank the more than 360 volunteers that gave their time to youth and adult athletics at the MCRD last year.

“You never know what kind of impact you are going to make,” said Alexander about the coaches’ ability to influence young athletes’ lives. Former MCRD Director Bill Wood introduced Bobby Mason, who was named the recreation department’s Person of the Year.

Looking back at the past year, Alexander commented on several successes, including the Morgan County 13-14 girls’ fastpitch softball team winning the state championship and the first year of the Lake Area Football conference, who played their first championship game at the Morgan County High School football stadium the week before.

Contemplating the future of the MCRD, Alexander summed up the department’s attitude by saying simply, “we’re going.”
