The Morgan County High School (MCHS) basketball program held the annual SweetSouth Classic this past Saturday, Nov. 30, at the MCHS gym. The varsity girls’ team took on the Druid Hills Red Devils and beat their 6A opponent 65-40. The boys’ varsity faced the Allatoona Buccaneers in a nail-biter, losing in overtime 63-69.
The Buccaneers’ fluid and aggressive style set the Dogs off their game in the first half; Allatoona took an early lead on the Hoop Dogs in the first quarter but were only leading 16-13 going into the second quarter.
At halftime, Allatoona remained ahead 31-26, but Morgan County scored 20 points in the third quarter to overtake the Buccaneers.
The Dogs began the fourth quarter ahead 46-43, but the lead went back and forth between the two teams through the final eight minutes of regulation. With 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Dogs trailed behind Allatoona by two points, but senior CJ Turman was fouled, earning two shots from the free throw line.
Turman had not made a free throw shot in five previous attempts during the game, but, with the tie and possibly the game on the line, he sank both baskets to tie the game 56-56.
Neither team was able to score in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, and the Dogs prepared for four minutes of overtime.
The Dogs held on for the first two minutes of overtime, but, by the time the last minute arrived, Allatoona was ahead 66-60. Tookie Brown sank a three-point shot with 49 seconds remaining to bring Morgan County to 63-66, but the Buccaneers were able to earn an additional three points while keeping the Dogs out of the basket to win the game 69-63.
Brown led the Morgan County boys in scoring, with a total of 27 points. Brown shot a perfect nine-for-nine from the free throw line during the game and made four three-point shots.
Additionally, Turman and Jailyn Ingram contributed 16 and 12 points, respectively, to the Dogs’ total. The Lady Hoop Dogs cruised to an overpowering 65-40 win over the Druid Hills Red Devils during the SweetSouth Classic. Druid Hills provided a good defensive front against the Lady Dogs during the first half of the game, but the Red Devils were not able to keep up with Morgan County’s offensive output and energy.
The Dogs led 16-11 after the first quarter, and put up another 20 points to Druid Hills’ 11 before the half. Morgan County’s girls never looked back, outscoring the Red Devils through the remainder of the game for a final score of 65-40. Sydney Nash, Alexis Brown, and Tatyana Davis each put up a dozen points or better against Druid Hills during the game.
The Morgan County Hoop Dogs begin region play this Friday night at Elbert County. The JV teams take to the court beginning at 4:30 p.m., with varsity games starting around 7 p.m. Ride up to see the Hoop Dogs in action against their region rivals, the Blue Devils, for another exciting, early-season matchup.
