The Morgan County High School (MCHS) varsity and JV Mat Dogs traveled out of town for separate competitions last Saturday, Dec. 7, after hosting home duals on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The MCHS varsity wrestling team traveled to Harrison High School in Kennesaw, where they competed in the Hoya Invitation, while the JV Dogs competed in the Collins Hill JV Duals in Lawrenceville.
The Harrison Hoya Invitational traditional tournament gave the varsity Mat Dogs a chance to see how far they could get in the bracket of their weight class on their own.
Morgan County heavyweight Zack Jenkins was crowned tournament champion in his weight division at the Hoya Invitational.
Nathan Lundy took the runner-up position in the 106-pound weight class for Morgan County, while Jody McAlister (138 lb.), D’Monta Wright (160 lb.), and John Grubbs (195 lb.) took third in their weight divisions.
Dalton Fulcher (126 lb.), Luke Mitchell (145 lb.), Jeremy Worth (170 lb.), and Colin Efird (182 lb.) earned fourth place finishes during the invitational.
As a team, Morgan County came in third place out of 10 teams overall with a total score of 122 points.
“Good day for our varsity guys, with us getting tons of quality matches and plenty of placers,” said MCHS Varsity Wrestling Coach John Robbins. “We were set back a bit by having to withdraw our ace Jacob McAlister due to a skin issue, but the rest of the guys did a great job finishing and bringing us home some team hardware.”
While the varsity Dogs were in Kennesaw, the JV Dogs had their hands full, facing five teams at the Collins Hills Duals in Lawrenceville.
The JV wrestling team took on host team Collins Hill to begin the day but narrowly lost the dual 37-45.
Morgan County rallied during the next dual against Duluth, whom the Dogs were able to beat 78-24.
MCHS kept the ball rolling by beating Dacula 45-24, but then lost to Alcovy 12-47 in the penultimate dual of the day.
The Dogs finished the duals on a good note by edging out Bremen 42-39.
Brian Guinn (106 lb.), Joe LeClair (113 lb.), Cody Lord (120 lb.), JW Guinn (126 lb.), Chris Bazemore (126 lb.), Will Donaldson (132 lb.), Jacob Beckham (138 lb.), Mason Woodham (138 lb.), Kadarius Andrews (145 lb.), Rogers Burke (145 lb.), Gurminder Singh (152 lb.), Billy Holtzclaw (182 lb.), and Michael Rhodes (182 lb.) all picked up wins at the Collins Hill Duals last Saturday.
The varsity and JV Mat Dogs hosted duals against Jackson County and Alcovy last Tuesday, Nov. 3, at home.
Lundy, Fulcher, Jacob McAlister, Jody McAlister, D’Monta Wright, Colin Efird, and Zack Jenkins picked up wins against Jackson County, but the Dogs lost the dual by a narrow 36-39 score.
Lundy, Jacob McAlister, and Jeremy Worth were all able to beat their Alcovy counterparts, but Morgan County wasn’t able to match the dual with Alcovy, losing 15-52.
JV Mat Dogs Singh and Woodham won both of their bouts at the Morgan County Duals, while Guinn, Andrews, Bailey, and Burke earned a single win during the day.
Tuesday, Dec. 10, the varsity and JV Dogs traveled to Commerce, where they competed against Chestatee and Habersham Central High Schools.
