A stormy Saturday couldn’t keep the Morgan County High School (MCHS) Swim Dogs out of the pool this past weekend. “Despite major storms rolling through Athens, MCHS Swim Dogs took on 26 other teams at the Clarke-Oconee Invitational,” said a swim team mom Kathryn Cardwell.

The Clarke-Oconee Invitational was held on Saturday Jan. 11 at UGA’s Ramsey Center in Athens. The Morgan County team placed 17 out of the 26 teams competing.

Along with finishing 17th, the Swim Dogs also racked up many other awards including personal best times. Twenty MCHS Swimmers brought home personal best times.

Personal bests were made by: Zach Fossum, Nick Hairwell, Micah Lee, Edward Robuck, Zac Seymour, Jill Bara, Mary Clair Cardwell, Sierra Castillo, Ellie Conn, Chloe Cooper, Grace Smith, Makenna Waszgiz, and Carolina Zant.

The stands of Ramsey Center Natatorium were packed with participants and supporters. The meet ran through most of the day due to the number of teams participating. Although there were no state qualifying swims for the MCHS Dogs, there were many outstanding swims. Nick Hairwell took 15th in the 200 freestyle, and Zach Fossum took 10th in the 100 butterfly, while Zac Seymour placed 12th in the 500 free. Mary Claire Cardwell took third in the 50 free and first in the 100 back. Cardwell’s win in the 100 backstroke added to her unbeaten streak during regular season meets. Carolina Zant took 10th in the 100 breaststroke and 14th in the 500 freestyle. The Swim Dogs will be back in the pool for their last meet of the season at Johnson Park in Conyers on Jan. 28.
