The Morgan County Board of Education (BOE) approved The Calendar Task Force’s proposed school-year calendars for the 2014-2015 academic year and for the 2015-2016 academic year on Feb. 10.
The 180-day school year will begin August 4, 2014 and finish May 22, 2015. The first semester will be 89 days and the second semester will be 91 days.
Holiday and seasonal breaks are scheduled as followed for the 2014-2015 academic year: Fall Break, Oct. 6-10; Thanksgiving Break, Nov. 24-28; Holiday Break, Dec. 22-Jan.2; Winter Break, Feb. 18-20; and Spring Break, Apr. 20-24. Amy BeMent, a Morgan County school teacher, presented the calendar proposal on behalf of over twenty school representatives, parents and community leaders who comprise the Calendar Task Force.
“ This took a lot of hard work and thinking. We put the children first, that’s how we went forward. We came up with the calendar based on what’s best for the children of Morgan County,” said Diane Veasley, a member of the Calendar Task Force.
“We also wanted to get the calendars out for two years in advance, so people have plenty of time to make plans around the school calendar,” added Jeff Bubenheim, member of the Calendar Task Force.
The BOE unanimously approved the proposal for both years, which the option to review it again in the fall. “These are hard decisions to make,” said Nelson Hale, chairman of the BOE. “It’s great to have a variety of input. I think what you brought us is a very good option for both this year and the following year.”
