It all leads up to this: several of Morgan County’s best swimmers made their way to Georgia Tech this week to compete in the State Swim Meet. On February 7 and 8 qualified swimmers and their coaches made their way to Atlanta to participate in the Georgia High School State Swimming Meet. For MCHS five swimmers attended the meet. Megan Hume (Sr), Caroline Smith (Jr), Grace Smith (Jr), Mary Claire Cardwell (So), and Carolina Zant (Fr) were among the swimmers competing at last week’s meet. Hume, Caroline Smith, Cardwell and Zant made up the two relay teams and were the first to compete.

The girls had qualified and participated in the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free Relay. In these events the girls dropped time and moved up in placement. In the 200 Medley Relay the team swam a 2:04.80 dropping 1.81 seconds from their qualifying time, earning them 40 place. In the 200 Free Relay the girls swam a 1:51.65 dropping .78 seconds from their qualifying time and placing them 46 overall.

On top of relays, Mary Claire Cardwell also qualified in two individual events- 50 yard Free and 100 yard Backstroke. Cardwell swam her best time in the 50 yard Free, a 25.83 earning her 32 place.

In 100 yard Backstroke, Cardwell placed tenth in the preliminary race with a time of 59.39 and qualified to swim in finals on Saturday.

In the finals, she swam a faster time of 58.98 earning her tenth-place finish in state in the 100 Backstroke. With their season now over the MCHS Swim Team is proud of all their swimmers. This year’s state meet was a success, as the team has continued to send more swimmers to state each year as the three-year-old program continues to grow.
