The Morgan County High School varsity Diamond Dogs dominated Oglethorpe County 11-2 last Wednesday, March 13, at Oglethorpe County High School.
The win puts the Dogs’ 2014 record at 7-3 just before the beginning of region play, which starts this Monday against East Jackson. Morgan and Oglethorpe held each other in a virtual stalemate during their second meeting of the season last Wednesday.
Through the first four innings, neither team was able to earn a single run. Only four Morgan County batters and three Oglethorpe County batters reached base on hits before the fifth inning began.
Oglethorpe took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, when two runners scored against the Dogs. In the top of the sixth, Morgan County responded with a vengeance, scoring five runs and taking a lead that they would never relinquish.
Maclane Zant, Eli Zimmerman, and Sam Couch were responsible for the first three RBIs of the inning, and Cody Harper finished off the scoring for the inning with a two-RBI double to center field. After shutting down three consecutive Oglethorpe batters in the bottom of the sixth, the Dogs entered the seventh still eager to expand their lead.
In the course of the final frame, Zant earned two additional RBIs, Ross Kirkpatrick drove two runners in, and Max Wadsworth Ryan Burden each earned a RBI for a total of six runs in the inning. Oglethorpe wasn’t able to threaten Morgan County’s 11-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh, allowing the Dogs to secure their seventh win of the season.
Brantley Frost pitched the first four and two-thirds innings for the Dogs, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out eight batters. Ryan Burden finished the game for Morgan County from the mound, allowing only one hit after facing nine batters.
Wednesday, the Dogs played Aquinas on the road, and they will play Aquinas at home today at 5:55 p.m. Next Monday, March 24, the Diamond Dogs begin region play with a home game against East Jackson at 5:55 p.m. The Dogs will then travel to play East Jackson in Commerce on Wednesday, March 26.
