Through April 13

• Georgia and Beyond:  Southern Self-taught Art, Past and Present. This folk art exhibition, curated by Susan Crawley, highlights the accomplishments of vernacular artists from Georgia and across the South, past and present.  The artists, including such well known names as Thornton Dial, Howard Finster, Clementine Hunter, Nellie Mae Rowe, and Bill Traylor, explore a wide variety of materials to fashion potent testimonies about their lives, their beliefs, and the world around them. Several pieces by noted Morgan County folk artist George Andrews are included in the exhibit. Georgia and Beyond is scheduled to be on display at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center through April 13, 2014 and the Benefactor Sponsor is the Cox Family Fund.  Visit the Cultural Center’s website for more information, www.mmcc-arts.org or call 706-342-4743.

Thursday, April 10

• Film Screening: The Retrieval, 7PM The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center will host the screening of The Retrieval, a feature-length film about a bounty hunter and a young boy’s journey during the Civil War. This screening of Chris Eska’s film is part of the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers and the screening partner is the Morgan County African-American Museum.  Tickets will be available at the door: $5 MMCC Members, $7 Non-members, and $5 students.  Beer, wine, and soft drinks will be available for purchase, and popcorn will be free! • MAGQuest A photographic scavenger hunt through Madison history and culture. Sign up at the Madison Artists’ Guild Gallery at 217 W. Jefferson St. Registration will be at the Madison-Morgan Chamber of Commerce upstairs at 2:00pm. 3-5pm for the hunt. Judging, prizes and fun to follow at the Icehouse Underground. • Tile Works 10a.m.-12p.m. The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art presents their Steffen Thomas Tile Works Family workshop. Join us as we create some unique clay tiles inspired by Steffen Thomas art work. Clay worker Elizabeth Collins instructs us as we produce tiles for our Museum Shop as well as some for ourselves! Everybody likes to “play in the mud” so be sure and sign up for this fun workshop early! Tuesday, April 15

• Student Series Performance “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” 9:30 AM & 1:00 PM. The Theatreworks musical production of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe will be performed at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center on Tuesday, April 15, 2o14 at 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM.   This enchanting musical is based on C.S. Lewis’ adventure story about four children of war-torn England, who accidentally enter the land of Narnia by climbing through a magic wardrobe. This Student Series performance, sponsored by Georgia Power and Morgan Stanley, takes place in the Center’s original 1895 school auditorium and last approximately one hour.  Individual general admission tickets may be purchased. • OLLI@UGA, Madison Lecture “The Great Gatsby” by Dr. Alexis Wagner, retired UGA English Faculty. The Cultural Center is pleased to expand educational programming through thought-provoking lectures presented by OLLI@UGA, Madison.  Join us for the last lecture in this Series, on Wednesday, April 16th at 2:45 PM in the Cultural Center Auditorium, “The Great Gatsby.” Dr. Wagner will talk about this enduring classic and why there’s a continuing interest in this story – known as a great American novel. This lecture series, available to adults ages 50 and up, have no prerequisites, no exams, no grades.  A special first-year OLLI membership rate of $25 is required, and each lecture is $10. • “Springtime in Madison.” Please join the Madison Artists Guild from 6:30pm – 8:00pm for the Opening Reception of our next show The James Madison Inn Exhibit “Springtime in Madison.” The Madison Artists Guild has some very talented local artists that will be displaying original artwork inspired by Madison in the Spring. This Exhibit is open from April 3rd – September 29th. The show and Opening Reception take place at The James Madison Inn at 260 W. Washington St. in the Oak Room.

Friday, April 18

• Cruise-In & Car Show in downtown Madison, on West Jefferson Street from the City Park up to Main Street.  Fun for the whole family, with cars of all ages and makes expected from around the state.  Oldies music will be provided by DOC-103.  FREE to pedestrian traffic; Registration for show entries starts at 5:30 p.m., with 25 awards plus a Best-of-Show trophy to be presented, starting at 8:30 p.m.  Entry fee for each car/truck/motorcycle is only $15.00, payable at the registration table.  This show is hosted by The Country Road Cruisers car club of Morgan County, with all profits above show costs going to support local Morgan County charities and a scholarship fund for a graduating Morgan County High School student. Show time: 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.  Be there, or be square!

• Young Artist Passion Project New this year at Madison Fest the Morgan County African American Museum (MCAAM) and the Madison Artists Guild (MAG) will premier YAPP, the Young Artist Passion Project . YAPP at Madison Fest will provide a venue for young artists to display and sell their artwork. A silent auction will take place throughout the day with awards and auction winners announced at 3:00.  YAPP will also provide interactive art-making stations where visitors can experience art being made by local artists and try hands-on activities with a pottery wheel, a printmaking station, or a shaving cream painting station. Enjoy a gallery of juried student artwork and bid on quality art at reasonable prices to help us teach student about the making AND the business of art making.
