We seem to be hearing a lot about the Koch brothers lately. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid calls them un-American. A local columnist quotes a filmmaker who describes the Koch brothers as “bankrolling a vast network of organizations that work to undermine the interests of the 99 percent on issues ranging from Social Security to the environment to civil rights,” and says that they represent the “1 percent at its very worst.”

So who are those villainous brothers? Actually, they are businessmen who control Koch Industries which the second largest privately owned business in the United States. And who are the “vast network of organizations that work to undermine the interest of the 99 percent?” Members of the Koch family have given to conservative and libertarian advocacy groups including think tanks like the Heritage Foundation the Cato Institute, Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Works. The Koch brothers actively fund and support organizations that contribute significantly to Republican candidates and have donated more than $196 million to dozens of free-market and advocacy organizations.

On the Democrat’s side they have George Soros. He is known as “The Man Who Broke the Bank of England” because of his short sale of $10 billion worth of pounds that made him a profit of $1 billion during the 1992 UK currency crisis. He now has a net worth of $23 billion and runs the Soros Fund Management hedge fund.

As a Wall Street billionaire, he fits the very definition of the one percent.

Soros is a supporter of progressive-liberal causes and has given over $8 billion to those causes. One of those causes is legalization of marijuana.

The Washington Times reports that Soros has funneled at least $80 million over the last 20 years to advocacy groups trying to legalize marijuana.

His funding helped legalize recreational pot use in Colorado and Washington state and organizations benefitting from his contributions are working to get the issue on Florida’s ballot as well. Similar legislation passed in Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, according to the Times.

The Koch brothers who have contributed $196 million to conservative causes have been outspent 40 times over by Soros’ $8 billon to progressive-liberal causes.

So why does Harry Reid ignore Soros and call the Koch brothers un-American? The answer is very simple.

The Koch brothers are supporting conservatives. Plus they make their money the old fashioned way by running a business; very un-American to politicians like Harry Reid.

Fred Johnson is a member of the Morgan County Republican Party.
