The Morgan County Middle School (MCMS) tennis team took on Malcolm Bridge last Thursday, April 3, at North Oconee High School. The MCMS girls played seven matches against Malcolm Bridge, winning five matches to Malcolm Bridge’ two. The MCMS boys topped Malcolm Bridge in five matches 4-1 as well.
Avery Kirby had the sole singles win for Morgan County, but the Dogs dominated in doubles matches, winning four of the five doubles competitions. The pairs of Callie Arienza and Caroline Rittenhouse, Clara Arienza and Lilly Courchaine, Sam Penland and Brooke LaVack, and Bria Hill and Ladreka Usher each came out on top of their Malcolm Bridge counterparts. “For our girls team, we agreed to play seven lines, two more lines than the traditional five lines to count for the match,” said MCMS Tennis Coach Sloan Gill.
“All of our practices and preparation really showed up when they took to the courts winning 5 -2 in very close matches. I am very proud of our girls’ team continuing with their undefeated season.” Chandler Brady and John Cardwell won singles matches for the Morgan County boys, while the doubles teams of Wyatt Breedlove and Owen Anderson and then Jay Wadsworth and Steven Nguyen also created wins for the MCMS boys’ team.
“Our boys team has really come full circle as I had thought would happen earlier this season,” said Coach Gill. “They have really pulled it together and are playing tennis as true competitive players. Pulling out their first team win this season against a seasoned team, winning overall 4-1 with one default. They went for the win and didn’t let up for one moment.” April 29, the team will host St. Joseph Middle School for the final match of the MCMS tennis season.
