Lakashia Willis, sophomore member of the Morgan County High School track team, placed third in the girls’ 800-meter race at the AAA B sectionals last Saturday, April 26, earning the opportunity to compete in the AAA State Track meet on May 1-3 in Albany. Willis finished with a time of 2:33.17, which was less than six seconds behind the top finisher at the sectional meet. “Lakashia felt good about her race but realizes she needs to run more this week to prepare for Thursday’s preliminaries in Albany,” said MCHS Girls Track Coach Dusty Hawkins.
“Being off during spring break didn’t really benefit her. Lakashia will get back on track this week and be ready for Thursday. Our plan is to shave 10 to 15 seconds off her time. This will allow her to be more competitive at the state level.” The qualifying heats for all of the running events will begin at the Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany on Thursday, May 1, with the qualifying heats taking place the next day, May 2. The finals will take place on Saturday, May 3. Best of luck to Lakashia Willis as she prepares to compete in the State Track Meet this week.
