Last week the Varsity Girls Soccer team traveled to St. Pius X to compete in the first round of playoffs. St. Pius X is the defending state champs making them a tough first round opponent for Bulldogs. On May 2 after the MCHS girls had spent a week preparing for the tough opponent the teams faced off in the St. Pius X stadium. The St. Pius golden lions held control of the ball for most of the first half, giving the Bulldogs little chance of shooting. Of the shots that MCHS did take the Lions stopped all attempts. Fighting hard Morgan County’s defense was not strong enough to stop the Lions quick offense.

St. Pius lead 7 to 0 at the end of the first half. After a brief half time the girls hit the field for the second half. St. Pius continued their lead netting three more goals and ending the game in mercy rule early into the second half. MCHS Coach Anne Stamps said that it was a good learning experience for the girls. They talked all of time about wanting to get better but it is always helpful to see a team like St. Pius in action.

“I had a great time coaching this great group of girls,” said Stamps. “I look forward to working with them in the years ahead.” Coach Stamps was particularly proud of her seniors, as the game against St.Pius X was their last of their high school careers. Anna Bryant led the defense this season. Coach Stamps said she did a great job as one of the captains on the team. Mikayla Taylor played multiple positions this season. Taylor hopes to go on and play soccer at Middle Georgia College. Itzi Hernandez battled an ankle injury this season, she started off strong had to sit due to the injury and made it back at the end of the season. Although the season may be over for the MCHS Varsity girls soccer team many of the girls will return next year. Coach Stamps said that the team will continue to grow and get better with time. Stamps is excited to get to be a part of the future of the program.
