After starting their summer season at Rockdale last week the Morgan County wrestlers took to their own gym hosting a set of matches for teams from around the area. “Generally there wasn’t much of a difference from last week. They still had mat time and experience but this was more competition not just like a practice,” said MCHS Wrestling Coach John Robbins. On Thursday June 5 the Morgan County wrestling team hosted a summer wrestling match. The match was their second effort of the summer season. However, this match was different then their last for a number of reasons. Teams from Camden County, Dublin, Elbert, Marist, Monticello, Social Circle, and Valdosta came to Morgan County.
The gym was covered in three mats and the back room of the gym held one more. Their coaches weighed in wrestlers when they arrived at the match. Once all the teams had the chance to warm up the wrestlers were called to the center of the court. Wresters then broke out into extended weight classes and waited their turns to be called to the mat to participate. Unlike their last summer wrestling match the event was scored. Coaches from the different schools lead each mat and scored the competitions.
However, the scores were not added together and no winner was announced. The meet was simply a chance for the high school students to get practice and stay in shape for the coming season. Each wrestler was able to face about four to six opponents. Thursday’s match also gave new wrestlers the opportunity to experience the match style. The coaches worked together to match the students up so they had a fair shot at competing against wrestlers like them. Morgan County will host two more matches like this in the coming weeks. The matches begin at 4 pm and consist of multiple teams.
