The past month has been busy for the Morgan County wrestlers but they will now have the chance to rest before the real season kicks off As a recap the past few weeks wrestlers from across Morgan County have committed themselves to camps, and matches. Thursday, June 19 was the groups last Thursday night meet of the summer. The meet allowed the boys to get experience on the mat preparing them for wrestlers they may see in the regular season.

“We had our best turn out in years this summer with dozens of teams per date,” said wrestling coach John Robbins. Thursday night’s matches brought teams from Central, Elbert, McEachern, Monticello, Social Circle, Sonoraville and Walnut Grove to the MCHS gym. At the beginning of the summer Coach Robbins posted about the various dates on different wrestling forums. Teams would then contact Coach Robbins to grab their spot in the different Thursday matches. This week brought a team from Salisbury, North Carolina to Morgan County. “I posted the dates on several forums from surrounding states,” said Coach Robbins. “Being as close as we are to metro Atlanta we often snag an out of state team passing through on their way to a camp or competition.” Coach Pittman from Salisbury has been bringing his team to Morgan County for the past four years.

Thursday night was the end to a busy June for the Mat Dogs. The wrestlers, who were not required to participate in summer matches and camps, packed nearly an entire season of wrestling into four weeks. Those wrestlers that have been coming out to matches and camps have learned a lot this summer. Coach Robbins has mentioned many times how these are the guys who are committed to getting better and this summer has allowed them to have mat time and gain experience. One of the other things that these guys have improved on is their understanding of what Coach Robbins and Coach Sidwell expect of them. The amount of time that the coaches have put into working with the boys this summer has been good for not only the coaches but also the students. Coach Robbins said that this summer of wrestling has been just what the team has needed before the start of school. Now that their busy June is over the team will take time off until the season.
