After two years of teaching tennis lessons in Morgan County Katherine Rittenhouse and Caroline Jones are bringing a weeklong camp to the Morgan County courts. “I would tell them to come on out. Everyone should try it because everyone normally ends up liking tennis and playing it for a lifetime,” said tennis coach Caroline Jones. Currently, the plan is for the camp to run July 21 through the 25 from 7 to 8 p.m. However, if more parents sign their kids up the camp will open up a 6 to 7 p.m. time slot. The great news is there is still time to sign your child up. “Tennis is a fun lifetime sport for kids to get involved with,” said Morgan County Rec Department Supervisor Chris Sides. “Our two instructors are fantastic at teaching the fundamentals of the game and they keep it exciting for the participants.” Both Rittenhouse and Jones want to encourage those who have not signed up yet to do so. They are excited about the chance to work with children from across Morgan County.
They feel that kids really enjoy playing together and interacting with each other. “I really like to see the kids and work with their different abilities because they’re all really different on what they’re good at, what they enjoy doing,” said Jones. Tennis is a team sport but it is also an individual sport and the coaches feel this weeklong camp will be a great opportunity to work both one-on-one and as a team. The camp will focus on all the fundamentals of the game including serving and forehand and backhand hits. The camp will teach these skills through fun games and drills. A child that participates in the camp can expect to hit about 100 balls an hour giving them a lot of practice in a short amount of time. Jones went on to say that the camp allows the kids to improve themselves while they are also improving as a team. Tennis camp is for kids ages five to 12 and is $48 for the week. If you are interested in signing your child up you can call 706-342-0588, come by the rec department office or go online to mcplayrec.org.
