The MCHS Football team is one step closer to the season. Last week, the team participated in an in-house camp and this week, they are preparing a scrimmage. “The kids enjoyed the time they got to spend together at camp,” said Head Football Coach Bill Malone. “The weather also made practice more bearable.” On Aug. 1-3, the MCHS varsity football team participated in the annual Camp Morgan.

Football camp was a time for the boys to continue their preparation for the coming season. Coach Malone went on to say that at camp the team emphasized offense and defense. They also worked on special teams enough to be satisfied with their progress.

Several players showed improvements and claimed their spots as starters on this year’s team. Brantley Frost had a really good scrimmage as quarter back on Saturday night. Matthew Callaway secured his spot as a two-way player at center and defensive tackle. Quincy Jones looked great catching and running with the ball. Dakoda Ruby blocked well and Andre Peterson moved from defensive end to linebacker and performed well.

Maclane Zant broke up a number of passes over the weekend. Jesse Brooks looked like a natural while blocking. Beyond the work they did on the field the guys had more bonding time over meals and activities. The football team watched Facing the Giants at Madison First United Methodist Church and swam at the Aquatic Center.

Bostwick Methodist, Centennial Baptist, Ed Latham, Macedonia Baptist Church and the Touchdown Club provided meals. Coach Malone wanted to say a special thank you to all the parents, churches, and friends of the team who helped make Camp Morgan a success.

Now that school is back in session the team will continue practicing. Fans can catch the Bulldogs in action this Friday Aug. 8 at home. The scrimmage starts at 7 PM and the Dogs will take on Apalachee High School. “We always look forward to the routine of school,” said Malone. “Attendance was great at workouts this summer, but it’s great to get a chance to see the guys in a more relaxed atmosphere and continue building relationships.”
