Greetings from The Springs! There’s much excitement about the rapidly approaching Corporate 3- Day Fast. We are not eating any food but we can consume a small amount of juice. The dates are from 5 p.m. Thursday, October 9 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 12. Daniel 9:3 -“And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting…” We are expecting God to do amazing things! The J.P. Carter High School Class of 1967 joined us in worship on Sunday as they celebrated their reunion. Joining USBC’s graduates, Carlene Elliott and Juanita Lett, were Jerome Levett, Lawrence Lester, Rev. Roberta Collins, Magalene Tucker, Linda Pitts, Carolyn Johnson, Willie Mae Collins, and Ida Heard. Also visiting on Sunday was Eugene Wallace who is a friend and colleague of Pastor Robert Terrell. Mr. Wallace lives in Fort Valley, Ga, so he had a little bit of a drive to get to us, but I know that his soul was blessed. I know that you didn’t forget to mark your calendars for USBC’s 4th Annual Choir Extravaganza. It will take place on Saturday, October 11th at 5:00pm. Our Minister of Music, Dr. Kathy Hubbard, will showcase the best of the best in Gospel music, so come and join us as we lift up praises to the Lord! The Women’s Conference was a great success! Dr. Kathy Hubbard and First Lady Toni Terrell planned a wonderful weekend for the ladies to come together and worship. Dr. Hubbard’s text came from 2 Corinthians 3:18 and First Lady Terrell led us to Jude 20-25. Ladies, if you missed the conference, read these scriptures and be encouraged. In addition, there will be another conference next quarter, so stay tuned! During Wednesday Night Bible Study we had another one of Pastor Terrell’s famed question and answer sessions. First he answered how the Word of God was given to us. In essence, His Word was inspired in the original context. God placed it in the mind, or soul, of a person by His Spirit. There is no private interpretation on The Word. It came by the will of God and not by the will of man. Also, there were several eyewitnesses such as Peter, James and John which confirmed that Jesus spoke the Word of God. The scripture references used were 2 Peter 1:16-21, Matthew 17:1-6 and 2 Timothy 3:15-17 and they validate that all scripture was given by God. The scriptures make us complete so that we can function in any given situation in life. Pastor Terrell also discussed being poor in spirit and tarrying for the Holy Ghost. I encourage you to meet with us on Wednesday nights for more clarification on The Word. Many of us were surprised, but pleasantly so, to find out that Pastor Terrell designated Sunday, September 28, 2014 as Member Appreciation Day. This was his way of showing us his gratitude of all the support that the church gives to him and the ministry. So, to celebrate, following service we were treated with steak sandwiches, hamburgers and hotdogs…YUM! Thanks, Pastor T! The sermon for Sunday came from 2 Corinthians 10: 3-6, 1 Corinthians 13:5 and Mark 9:20-29. Reverend Robert Terrell gave us the weapons of warfare which include prayer, fasting, love, faith, the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. There are times when some of these can be used alone, yet there are other times when they need to be used together. In 2 Corinthians 10: 3-6, we are given several forms of warfare and Pastor Terrell gave us the weapons to use. To cast down strongholds in our lives, we need to use prayer and fasting. To “cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God,” we need to use faith and the Word of God to bring down those demons. When we need to bring our thoughts “into captivity to the obedience of Christ,” it takes love. To further prove this, we looked at 1 Corinthians 13:5. This passage talks about love and states it “does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, it is not provoked, thinks no evil.” When crazy thoughts come and they start playing tricks with your mind, you must forgive and love. Going back to the first text, when it comes time to “being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled,” most of us want to handle this ourselves. We will tell Jesus to fix it, but still try to do it with our own efforts. However, this is when we need the use the weapon of the Holy Spirit. God will avenge all disobedience for you when you obey and do what The Word says. Again, we have to know which weapons to use for different situations. Next, Pastor Terrell focused the second half of his message talking about strongholds. To explain this, he went to Mark 9:20-29 where the demon possessed son is delivered. Jesus said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” The father confessed his unbelief and asked for help. We must do the same and tell God what our problems are and ask Him to help us and our unbelief. A stronghold can only be broken by prayer and fasting. The situations that have not changed are because we have not fasted and prayed. We need to be mindful that a stronghold is something that has been fortified. Those strongholds form when demons join together to abide in us. They are fortified and don’t plan to leave. Those demons want to take up permanent residence. The only way to remove their forts from us is to pray with fasting. Prayer alone will not do it! We are doing a corporate fast to remove strongholds. God will release them when we fast and pray. If you remember, I stated that in Bible study, Pastor Terrell told us that the scriptures make us complete so that we can function in any given situation in life. Therefore, pulling from The Word, we need to be sure to use the correct mighty weapons of warfare! Glory Be To God!
