The Morgan County Recreation Department (MCRD) will be hosting its’ first “Movie and Picnic in the Park” on Saturday Oct. 11 at the Heritage Park. The first feature is the Lego Movie, which will start between 7:30-7:45 p.m., but the Rec Dept. has planned games and activities for kids, such as face painting, starting from 6:30 p.m.. The movie is free of charge and open for everyone to attend, and concessions will be sold separately by the MCRD. Movie goers are recommended to dress for the weather, and bring blankets or other accommodations for sitting.   Chris Sides, the MCRD program supervisor, is excited about this event and looking forward to providing a family-friendly bonding activity. Sides said he came up with the idea a few years ago, because a lot of the Atlanta Rec Depts. have successfully organized this event and so they thought to try it here as well. But last year their efforts were derailed twice, due to weather problems but Sides was determined to host this event.   He held this idea as “A great way for families to hang out in unique setting” and fully expects to have “Movie and picnic in the Park” at least 2-3 times a year. Sides said ” At the Rec Dept. we take pride in our sports, but have expanded our programs to include other things, such as Dance and Self-defense.” Sides wants to encourage “family time and community participation, by hosting events, such as the Father-Daughter dance and Mother-Son ‘Carnival Nite’ ” and organizing gatherings such as the “Movie and Picnic in the Park.”   The first movie is costing the MCRD $350 and being single handedly paid by the Rec Dept. but Sides plans to garner sponsorships and volunteers for future dates. Sides chose the Lego Movie for their first featuring, due to the excitement concerning the movie’s release during the MCRD’s summer day camp, “All the kids were talking about it, wanted to see it and we wanted to bring in a crowd and get a baseline reference for future occurrences.” But he wants “people to give suggestions, and if we have a good turnout we’ll have Halloween movie or a Date night movie, because we want to constantly grow our program”. He hopes the citizens of Morgan County to realize that at the Morgan County Recreation Department, if “people want it, and someone can teach it, we will have it for you, because we care about our community and our families.”
