Morgan County High School’s girls Cross Country team came in 9th place in Saturday’s AAA State Cross Country meet in Carrollton, Ga. with an average time of 23:59.23. Lakashia Willis finished first for Morgan County in 38th place overall, with a time of 23:12.55. “Our goal was to be in the top 10, and the girls met my expectations,” said Coach Dusty Hawkins. “I’m super proud of all of them.” Coach Hawkins also said that all of the teams in Morgan County’s region finished in the top 10 as well, which speaks highly of Morgan County’s performance as well as the competition in the region. As the season ends, Coach Hawkins is looking into the future and preparing for next fall. By creating a summer workout program, Hawkins plans to have the boys and girls in top shape before the season begins. He also said that he is advising his runners to play soccer in the spring in order to stay in shape. Morgan County Middle School will hire a coach to officially oversee their Cross Country program, which, according to Hawkins, is very important to building a better team. Morgan County will also be changing their home course to Heritage Park, which will be open to the public and will ultimately be more convenient for the Cross Country teams. Coach Hawkins hopes that this new course will also get more people involved in running. “We’re hoping that if we get more parents involved in running, students will be more likely to get involved.”
