The Madison Mayor and City Council unanimously voted to deem Madison a “Purple Heart City” at the January 12 meeting.

Local Purple Heart veterans attended the meeting to witness the declaration delivered by Fred Perriman, mayor of Madison, including Morgan County Commissioner Donald Harris. “We are especially honored tonight to have our veterans here with us,” said Perriman. “It is a very special evening.”

Perriman called the present veterans up to gather around the American flag as he praised their unparalleled bravery, sacrifice, and service.

“As the people of the City of Madison have great admiration and the utmost gratitude for all the men and women who have selflessly served their country and this community in the Armed Forces,” said Perriman.

“Veterans have paid the high price of freedom by leaving their families and communities and placing themselves in harm’s way for the good of all. The contributions and sacrifices of the men and women from the City of Madison who served in the Armed Forces have been vital in maintaining the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by our citizens and many men and women in uniform have given their lives while serving in the Armed Forces.”

Perriman is proud ot be part of a community with many decorated war heroes. “Many citizens of our community have earned the Purple Heart Medal as a result of being wounded while engaged in combat with an enemy force, construed as a singularly meritorious act of essential service…”

According to the Purple Heart Foundation, “The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action. The heritage it represents is sacred to those who understand the price paid to wear it.”

Perriman was honored to officially declare Madison as a Purple Heart City while surrounded by local veterans.

“We, the Mayor of City Council of the City of Madison, Georgia, do hereby proclaim the City of Madison as Purple Heart City, honoring the service and sacrifice of our nation’s men and women in uniform wounded or killed by the enemy while serving to protect the freedoms enjoyed by all Americans,” proclaimed Perriman.

Perriman shook the hands of all the veterans present before closing the proclamation ceremony.

“If anyone deserves to be honored it is these men here tonight,” said Perriman.
