Morgan’s Middle School track team competed this past Wednesday against Jasper County, Carson, and Carver Middle Schools finishing third in both the girls’ and boys’ competition. In the first meeting between the four teams, the Dogs got a second place finish out of the boys and an identical third place finish for the girls scoring 33 points. I caught up with Coach Milfred Franklin of the girls before the game,“We have had a lot of injuries in the past couple of weeks that have affected our progress, but we should have most of our runners ready today.” The boys’ coach, Stacy Webb, a Greene County native and first year coach in Morgan County commented, “We finished second against these three teams so we hope to improve on that today.”

Scoring for the boys went like this: In the long jump Levi Ruesmann had a third place finish in both the long jump with a distance of 17’2” and triple jump with a distance of 33’4”. Next Len’Neth Whitehead won the shot put at 52’2”, and was followed up by Logan Eaton getting second place in the discus throwing for an 89’4” distance. Then the Dogs’ 4 x 100 relay team of Cole Freeman, Logan Eaton, Len’Neth Whitehead, and Levi Ruesmann grabbed a fifth place finish with a time of 51:60. Later in the meet the boys took over in the 1600 meters race coming away with the first and second place spots. Noah Brown won it all with a time of 5:44 and Nathan Hicks finished second at 5:57. In the 400 meters Bronson Cherry finished fourth at 1:04.26, Logan Eaton was fourth in 110 hurdles at 18:72, and Noah Brown had a second place finish in the 800 meters. His time was 2:33. Coach Webb gave one last shout out to the parents after the meet, “We really appreciate all the parents who came out to support the team and players today. It really makes a difference.”

The girls were also impressive with two first place finishes starting with Destiny Williams in the Discus on a throw of 28 feet and Morgan’s 4 x 100 relay team of Tamia Benford, Arkishia Williams, Unique Hubbard, and Nina Connell with a time 54.6 seconds. The Lady Dogs got a second place finish from Sarah Peppers in the 1600 meters. Others winning points were Nijah Young in the high jump, Peppers again in the long jump, Williams again in the discus, Rebecca Braxley 1600 meters, Mackenzie Torbush 400 meters. The teams have their next meet on March 31 on the road facing the home team Youth as well as Loganville and Social Circle. Coach Webb told us after the game, “I am proud of our young men. They did well today and are planning to keep working to improve each week.”
