The MCHS JV tennis teams were on the move last week playing two matches against Oconee County and Athens Academy going 3-1 over that span. The girls’ team won both matches in convincing fashion while the boys split. Coach Catherine Lindsey must be proud of this young and talented group as they continue to improve. The future looks bright for Dog tennis at the rate this group is going. Against Oconee County Morgan won 5-1 by getting wins at #1 singles from Avery Kirby 8-3, #2 singles Caroline Rittenhouse 8-5, #3 singles Madison Gasque 8-0, #5 singles Lilly Courchaine 8-0, and #1 doubles team of Clara and Callie Arienzo 8-0. The second match of the week against a very strong Athens Academy team saw the girls winning 4-2 with good performances by Callie Arienzo at #2 singles 8-2, Clara Arienzo #3 singles 8-4, #1 doubles team Carley Henry and Madison Gasque 8-1, and #2 doubles Caroline Rittenhouse and Lily Courchaine in a hotly contested match 9-7. The girls played well against some of the best competition they have faced all season. The boys defeated Oconee in a well-played contest 3-2 that gives them confidence going forward as the Warriors are usually the team to go through for a region championship. The team played five singles matches with winners at #1 Will Spates in a tiebreaker 9-8, #3 Noah Harris winning decidedly 8-4, and at #4 Will Owen 8-4. Morgan knew they had their work cut out in the second match of the week against Athens Academy. They are a perennial powerhouse in tennis and are usually in the hunt at the state level. Morgan lost the match 1-5 with the only win coming from Noah Harris at the #3 singles spot 8-4. Please see page 1B for upcoming matches and all the sports action for MCHS and MCMS this week.
