By Tia Lynn Ivey managing editor Construction has begun on the coming Farmers Market, located at 2620 Eatonton Hwy in Madison. The Farmers Market is the outcome of an unique private-public collaboration between Kelly Products, inc., located in Covington, and Morgan County. According to Keith Kelly, Kelly Products’ president and CEO, development for the Eatonton Highway property will have a phased approach, beginning with a specialty grocery concept store with a café and a farmers market. There will be an emphasis on unique, high quality and local products. Consumer education will be a key component as the site evolves. “Keith has been pleased with the project. The construction of the barns will start in June” said BOC Chairman Andy Ainslie. “The pad is just about complete, the excess dirt is all finalized and the piping started. The biggest thing is, they are getting ready to put up barns later this month. They are well on the way.” County Manager Michael Lamar named the Farmers Market as one of the two main special projects the county has committed to bringing to fruition, along with the Mannington Mills expansion. According to Lamar, the Farmers Market will not just cultivate fresh food for the citizens of Morgan County, but cultivate economic development. “We have contributed a hefty load to this but how can you say no? You would cut off your nose to spite your face if you did,” said Lamar. The County will help implement the $100,000 Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) grant to add a turning lane and deceleration lane next to the Farmers Market, as well as install waste water lines. The estimated completion date for the project is November of this year.
