Morgan’s JV girls took a pair of wins this weekend against Laney and Buford. They defeated Laney 43-26 on Friday and squeaked out a win vs. Buford on Saturday in double overtime 59-57. The Lady Dogs came out slow in the first period against Laney, but went to their full court press even though Head Coach Brett Bell said they weren’t fully prepared to do so. After a dead ball timeout when the team was pretty stagnant on offense, the girls went to their 1-2-1-1 press and immediately got three turnovers that resulted in consecutive layups from the steals. Coach Bell said, “Late in that quarter we were in dire need of some offense and the press gave us that. We kept the pressure on and that was the difference in the game. The girls started making plays.” Morgan took a 20-19 halftime lead and that was the closest Laney would get.

“We turned it on in the second half due to our defensive pressure and held them to only seven points in the second half.” Leading scorers for the underdogs were C. Anderson with 12 and M. Walker with 11. The Saturday night win gave the crowd some butterflies with the girls coming out on top in the double overtime win. The Lady Dogs were down 10 after the first quarter without the services of Aris Hubbard who was being held out for her needed playing time on the varsity. Players can only play six quarters in one day, so she did not play in the first quarter. However, she made her presence felt in the second and dominated play in the press and on offense to give Morgan a lift. The team made a run in the second quarter scoring 22 points of which many were layups. Coach Bell again commented, “It was tied 49-49 after regulation and both teams struggled defensively with lots of fouls and players fouling out on both teams. The overtimes went back and forth when Liz Couch made a clutch three. That was the game winner. We pulled it out when they made a shot to come within one point, but we made one out of two free throws to seal the deal.”
