Morgan County’s wrestlers suffered a 46-27 loss to one of the state’s top AAAAAA dual teams, Rockdale County, last Tuesday. Winners in the match were 106: Mason Adams (MOCO) over Jordan Nelson (ROCO) (Inj. [time]), 126: Donovan McElligott (MOCO) over Rodney Winston Jr. (ROCO) (Dec 5-4), 152: Luke Mitchell (MOCO) over Juan Ponce (ROCO) (Fall 2:15), 182: D`Monta Wright (MOCO) over Slade Bass (ROCO) (Fall 3:20), and 285: Matthew Callaway (MOCO) over Tanner Moore (ROCO) (Fall 1:40) Coach John Robbins observed, “Rockdale is a top flight team, continuously finding their way into the 6A final four at the State Duals.

I’m very happy with the way we wrestled, although I wish a few of those nail biters would have gone our way to give us the win.” Morgan finished first at the John Smith Mountaineer Invitational this past weekend by defeating West Hall, Lanier, and top ranked 6-A Lambert at Lumpkin County. The Dogs edged out Lumpkin 164.50 to 156.00 to get the win in the tournament to push their record to 4-1 in dual meets. Robbins again commented about the win saying, “I think Saturday at Lumpkin we started to get a bit of a rhythm. Overall we wrestled well, but our lineup is still shifting a bit. Our guys are just now approaching 10 or so matches, so we are starting to get acclimated. It was tough to get only four through the semifinals and into the finals when we had four or five more that nearly made it. We won the tourney however by the efforts of those in the consolations brackets.
