Walter Curtis Butler was born June 11, 1922 in Morgan County to the late Sallie Kate Taylor and Vinson Butler. He died Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Southern Pines Hospice. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Hattie Mae Butler, sons Melvin L., Bobby and Walter Curtis Butler Jr., granddaughter Ashley Shaunice Butler, parents Sallie Kate Taylor and Vinson Butler. He grew up in Buckhead. He was married to the late Hattie Mae Mitchell December 24, 1941 and they had five children, Ernest Vinson, Walter Curtis Jr., Bobby, Helen, Marie and Melvin L. He adopted his wife’s niece Linda Diane Veasley upon the passing of her parents. He joined Mount Zion Baptist Church in Buckhead at an early age. He was an active member, served on the Deacon Board and was President of the Senior Choir for over 30 years.
His passion was singing and he enjoyed most being a part of the choir, traveling to many counties and cities to sing and transporting members of the choir to the events. His other passion was driving. He was employed for over 40 years as a milk tank driver for Joe Bell Dairies and subsequently with S. J. Saffold Inc. He was also an entrepreneur as he maintained his own farm and pulpwood business. In his later years he served as a school bus driver for Morgan County Board of Education for over 25 years. Mr. Butler served in the United States Army during World War II in the Medic Unit and was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945 as Private First Class.
He received the following medals: American Theater Ribbon, Victory and Good Conduct Medal. He will always be remembered and loved by his caring children, Ernest (Stella) Butler, Helen Marie Butler and Linda Diane Veasley; daughters-in-law Laura Bell Butler, Thelma Butler and Shirley Butler; grandchildren, Vinson Corey Butler, Crystal Nicole and Dallas Heard, Cheryl Renee and Travis Freeman, LaVelle Frenchette and Terry Lemon, Lauretha Celeste and Jamond Sims, Walter Curtis III and Quianna Butler, Bobby Derrick and Mishell Butler, Stacey Patrice and Eric Glenn Kevin Maurice and Tiffany Butler; great grandchildren Brittney Nicole Jacobs, Terrance Maquin Gardner, Devin Alexander Butler, Alexis and Jared Glenn, Melvin Davis Jr., Bryson Heard, Addisyn and Evan Freeman, Terry (TJ) Lemon Jr., Michael and Christopher Evans, Jaden and Brandon Butler, Jordan and Caleb Sims, Keyonna Butler, Amiya and Jonathan Butler, Samiya, Trinity and De’Asia Dunn. He will be missed by his adopted children Patricia and Roy Binion, Sandra and Ernest Bailey and Tommie Mae Carter and a host of cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 2 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Buckhead with the Rev. Roi T. Johnson officiating. Interment was in Mt. Zion Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were his grandson and his granddaughter served as flower ladies. Jones and Turner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
