MAYSA Girls advance to semi-finals of state tournament

Last weekend, The Madison Area Youth Soccer Association (MAYSA) girl’s U-14 team traveled to Griffin, Ga., to play in the state tournament, facing fierce competition. The girls won 3-0 in a game against Metro Atlanta Youth Soccer, but lost the second game to the number one team, Atlanta Football Club. In the first game against Metro Atlanta Youth Soccer “Strikers,” striker Avery Callaway took a shot from the 18-yard box to score the first goal of the game. The second goal took place when another striker, Natalie Porto, took a shot and hit off the cross bar in which right half-back. Brooke Morrison, followed the rebound with a volley making the score 2-0. Riley Friesen took a penalty kick in the box and scored the final goal for a total of 3-0. In the next game, played against the number one team in the tournament, Atlanta Football Club “Lightning,” the Madison “Storm” girls fell behind 2-0 in the first half. In the second half Erica Perfecto scored from midfield in the last 10 minutes. They could not score a game-tying goal, which ended the game with a score of 2-1. On Sunday, the girls came out strong in their first game against MAYS Forsyth. Midfielder Carly Lantz scored three goals throughout the game, and Riley Freisen, Brooke Morrison, and Brooke Butler each had one goal to end the game 6-0. At that point the girls qualified for the semi-final round, which would be played against Athens United. The first half of the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Athens was then able to score two goals in the second half to beat the Storm 2-0, thus eliminating them from the tournament. According to Coach Ryan Cathey, “The girls played well overall, we just needed to plays smarter soccer.”
