A 44-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly stabbed his 20-year-old son during an argument over a roll of toilet paper. According to Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reports, Edgar Franklin Cape, Madison was arrested and charged after he and his son engaged in an argument after the son entered a bathroom and took a roll of toilet paper to give to a guest who had spent the night. Reports allege that during the January 23 argument, Cape produced a pocket knife and stabbed the son in the hand. A deputy responded to the Mallard Ridge residence and initially located the son and his mother in a vehicle outside the residence. The mother alleged that when she was attempting to stop the fight, Cape struck her as well. The deputy noted that the son had a puncture wound in his hand. The mother said she was going to transport the son to Morgan Memorial Hospital. Cape told authorities that he told his son he could not take the toilet paper “to his bathroom and his son got an attitude and started ‘showing out,’” reports state. He said his son then began to strike him and he pulled a knife and told his son to back up. He said his son continued to strike him and made contact with the knife. The son alleged that during the argument Cape threatened to “gut him” with the knife.
