The MCHS Swim Dogs had a very successful performance at the GHSA State Swimming Championships on February 5-6. Mary Claire Cardwell placed fifth overall in the 100 yard backstroke and 15th in the 50 yard freestyle. The Medley Relay team of Mary Claire Cardwell, Carolina Zant, Ellie Conn, and Maggie Hume placed 39th overall and set a new school record. The 200 Free Relay team of Zant, Lily Courchaine, Hume, and Cardwell placed 41st and also set a new school record. The 400 Free Relay team of Courchaine, Lauren Bone, Ellie Conn, and Zant placed 45th. This is the team’s first year qualifying in the 400 Free Relay.

“I am very pleased with the girls’ performance. It is quite an accomplishment to qualify for the State meet after only having this program for five years,” said Coach Susan Courchaine. “They have worked very hard and our small team has come a long way in a short amount of time. We will be very sad to lose some of our seniors at the end of this year.” Coach Courchaine is especially proud of Swimmer Mary Claire Cardwell and Maggie Hume. “Mary Claire has truly been our star swimmer for the last four years. We wish her luck as she moves on to swim at UGA next year,” said Courchaine. “Maggie Hume has also been a key member of our relay teams. Those young ladies will be sorely missed, but I am also excited about our group of younger girls who are dedicating themselves to this sport with plans to return to the State meet each year.”
